    protecto-plate

I have a 72 coupe that was missing the tank sticker, but has the original protecto-plate. I would like to decode it. Can anyone help me with this or tell me where to find out how to read it? Thanks, Tom

    Tom-----

The Protecto-Plate is not going to give you all of the information found on the build sheet (tank sticker).

For 1972 the plate data will decode as follows:

    first line----

    [space-------------------------------] [VIN]--------carb type; R or H

    second line

[engine number]---[space]---[rear axle code]----[space]---month of car build

    third line

    [transmission number]

    "fourth" line

    [space]--------------------------------------------------Bow-Tie Logo

Below all of this is the dealer added original owner info affixed with dymo tape.

The carb type is R= Rochester; H=Holley

Engine number should match the stamping on the engine stamp pad.

Rear end number should match the stamping on the bottom of the differential carrier, just forward of the cover.

Transmission number should match the stamping on the side of the transmission case located in various places depending upon trans type.

If your car has the original driveline components, the Protecto-Plate doesn't really provide you any additional information about the car. However, it can help you to confirm that the car has its original driveline components. It doesn't provide any additional information, though.

Joe,Thanks for the information. I didn't know all the plate would tell me. Your info lets me confirm that the driveline is in fact original as it matches up. I still hope to find some sort of build sheet tucked away in the car somewhere. I have a "C" in my carb spot, and the car has a Carter built Q-Jet on it. Would not that be correct?

Yes, I believe that "C" was used for Carter-manufactured Q-Jets. The coding was for the carburetor MANUFACTURER.
