    Engine suffix code label

Hi all, Can someone please give me the letters that are on the engine suffix code label found on the rear passenger valve cover of a 1971 L48 automatic CJK block. Thank you. -Jerry

    Jerry----

As far as I know, the letters should be "CJK". The "broadcast codes" found on these labels were generally the same as the engine suffix code found on the pad. The purpose of the labels was to allow St. Louis personnel to easily and quickly identify the proper engine assembly without having to resort to inspection of the engine pad.

        Jerry & Joe,

In the 1970-1972 time frame these valve cover labels contained the engine suffix codes in large letters and in smaller numbers the last 3 numbers of the distributor and the degrees of initial advance. The original tags were one piece. The TIM&JG gives a more detailed description of the label.

There are vendors who sell these tags with just the broadcast code as one piece, there are others who sell seperate letters, so that you wind up with three pieces to make the whole code. These differences will, obviously, result in different levels of deduction.

            Hi Terry,

Who sells these for 70-72 (and later)? I have seen them through 69, but have absolutely NEVER seen them advertised or sold for 70 and later. There was even a post a while back with someone asking for this exact part, and he and I agreed they must not exist to date.

The only time I have ever even "seen" one for after 70 was in Dobbins' book.

Checked. They kind of 'cheat' for labels after '69. Before '70, engines were two-alpha suffix codes. After, went to three-alpha codes sequences. What they do is 'make up' the code you need from existing 2-alpha label sets and it's up to you to make clean/straight cut and align the individual alphas so they 'appear' to be a single continuous 3-alpha label....
