Re: undercoating
Those old undercoatings are typically asphalt based and will dissolve with meneral spirits. (So will the frame paint.)
Several have reported good luck with heat guns. The heat will soften the material, and allow it to be scrapped off. Then you can clean up any residue with mineral spirits.

Re: undercoating
IF YOU ARE GOING TO DO A FRAME OFF RESTO, PULL BODY AND THEN ATTACK THE UNDRCOATING DEBRIS WITH FIRST, AS dUKE SUGGESTS, MINERAL SPIRITS( KEROSINE OR VARSOL). IF THAT DOESN'T SOFTEN THE UNDERCOATING, GO WITH CAPT.LEES PAINT REMOVER FOLLOWED BY LAQUER THINNER. DON'T LEAVE PAINT REMOVER ON A GIVEN SQUARE FOOT FOR MORE THAN A HALF HOUR BEFORE SCRAPING IT OFF WITH A PLASTIC PUTTY-KNIFE TYPE INSTRUMENT.GOOD LUCK, MIKE- Top

Brake Parts Cleaner
Bob,
I used brake parts cleaner in the spray can. It worked well but you need to be well ventilated and it will take the original paint off the frame. Spray, walk away for a minute or two then go back and scrape. Be careful with any paint removers. They can also remove the origianl finish on the fiberglass and lift the fibers. End result will be a fuzzy dog look to the panels. Good luck it is not a fun project. I spent a month getting mine off.
