    filler at bonding points

    Hi guys;
    I am doing my own body work on my 69 convertible, and feel I am almost ready for primer. Just in case I am not able to paint my car, I had a local body shop owner, here in Virginia Beach, who has experiance in restoring Corvettes and Camaros come by my house to look over my car and give me an estimate to finish the body. He mentioned that while I have stripped the car and sanded/prepared it well, he would still have to prep the car at his shop, then go through the usual process of priming, block sanding, wet sanding, then painting base/coat clear coat. I asked him what the preping entailed, and he said " Well you know all the filler at the bonding points has to be removed and new filler has to be applied". Is this so? I can see no problems with the filler that is currently there. it is smooth with no cracks or imperfections. It isn't original filler it was applied in 1986 when I had this car put back together and painted with black Imron. The car has been garage kept since. I am mainly concerned with the rear clip bonding points( the front is a Eckler replacement front clip). I will be using slick sand primer, I am trying to do the job myself, even though he gave me a good price($3600) for what he termed would be a show quality paint job. I am going to use it as a driver/Saturday showcar locally. Is he correct in saying I should remove the filler at the bonding points or can I just use the old filler that still looks good?
    Thanks,
    TED

    Typically when a car is stripped especially with liquid stripper, any polyester filled joints, seams, and previous body work will have to be, at a minimum refinished on the surface. It is best to do it, but ultimately its your call.

      Waynes right if it has been exposed to stripper it should be removed. Also if you think another shop is going to finish the job let him do the last sanding and prime it. No shop/painter wants to finish someone elses work. If you do the job make sure you use the same brand of paint& primers from start to finish DONT mix & match.Bill
