    Ralley Wheel Trim Ring Removal

OK...so we're all entitled to one idiotic question per day...right?! Here's mine, how do you safely remove the trim rings from Ralley wheels? There appears to be as many as 4-5 two-pronged clips, between the ring and the wheel, holding the rings on.

    Kevin,
Removal trick is to use a flat blade BIG screw diver. Place it in the middle of each clip and pry up against the tire. This helps relief some of the clips tension and off it comes. If your clips are well used (as mine are)this will also work same way against each of the clips outer tangs, one at a time.

So when removed, the clip stays on the ring, or on the wheel?

        Kevin-----

The clips are part of the trim ring assembly, so they are supposed to stay on the ring.

After reading my TIM/JG, which is what I should have done to begin with, it states that the wheels should be balanced from the backside anyway...therefore, no need to remove the trim rings. Thx all.

            Kevin,

If it were me, I'd remove the rings if you get the tires balanced. But that's just me.

Unless you're looking for points you'll get a better balance job by doing dual plane

I've had too many bad experiences with loose trim rings and/or squeaky trim rings to ever put weights on the outside of the rim again. The dynamic balance (using both sides) vs. static balance (inside only) really only makes a difference above 80 mph or so. I can't say I've been 80 mph + for too many prolonged periods of time in the Vette, and even in th4e low 70s I've never felt a vibration problem.

Kevin On original trim rings I use two scratch awls. One on each end of the clip between the clip and the rim. Repeat four times and their is no chance of bending or denting the trim ring. Lyle

If you do go the "dual plane" method, make sure you mark or somehow designate where the clips are going to be, so when the weights are installed, they do not interfere with the clips. In some cases, you may need two small weights seperated by 2-3 inches rather than one bigger one right where the clip would be.

I had mine done dual plane, but then again, I spend a LOT of time up there where it makes a difference!

                      Re: Trim Ring Quickie

I'm curious as how to quickly identify rings for 8" vs 7" rims.

If I placed my trim rings on my bench face down, what should the depth be for 7" rims?

My dumb question for the day.

                        Chuck-----

The trim rings for 8" wheels when measured as you describe are 3-5/16". The trim rings for 7" wheels will be less than that, but I don't know what the dimension is.
