When I went to start our 64 the car jumped like it was in gear with the clutch pedal in. It would start in neutral but would not go in gear. Tried to start it in gear again with the clutch in and there was this loud clunk noise. Now the clutch is free but when I rev it up there is this metallic sound under the hood that sounds like its coming from the bell housing. The clutch adjustment is all the way to the end. Does this sound like my clutch just bit the dust?? If so are there any recommendations for a new clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing etc for a 300hp???

Re: 64 Bad Clutch ???????
You most likely experienced clutch components sticking together when you tried to start your 64 with the clutch pedal in with the car in gear and the car reacting as if you were starting the car in gear with the clutch pedal not depressed. Starting it in neutral and trying to put it in gear and it not wanting to go sounds very familiar. During 35 1/2 years of ownership of my 68 this has happened twice when the car was not driven for a period of time. I was able to brake mine loose without breaking anything, but it did not come loose in just starting the car in gear. Mine let go with a pretty loud noise and that was over 15 years ago and its still working great.- Top

Re: 64 Bad Clutch ???????
From your discription it sounds like one of three things.
1. The clutch disk is stuck to the flywheel.
2. There is a problem with the clutch linkage or adjustment.
3. There is a major problem of the clutch release bearing or pressure plate.
#3 would account for the noise
How much free play is there in the clutch? You should have an inch or so. If there is too much play your clutch will not disengage.
