    68 TI Pulse Amplifier

I've confused myself again. Facing the amplifier I believe that the Pink wire is on the left, the gray wire on the right, and the Black horizontal at the top. Can anyone verify this for me? Thanks.

    Mike,

For what it is worth, I have a pulse amplifier on my '68 big block and it has the following configuration. Black is on the top, grey on the left and pink on the right, facing the amplifier from the front of the car.

I agree with Jack, facing the amplifier fin-side, plug-on-bottom, on a non-pigtail (pre-Jan '68 ?) amplifier and harness. Interesting to note that the pink and gray are reversed on the GM schematics (?) of the Shop Manuals.

        Jack and Wayne,

        Thanks,

Wayne, I'm probably looking at the same drawing you are where the pink is on the left. I have a note from when I took it apart that the grey was on the left, and I saw a 67 this morning and the pink was on the left. I can't imagine that they would be reversable.

I believe this amplifier has been rebuilt using an "upgraded" circuit board from TI Specialty. I wonder If they are reversed on the new circuit boards.

Have either of yours had this treatment?

          Mike,

I bought my car 17 years ago and have no evidence of any retro-fit of the ignition module. I opened the module once to re-solder a diode connection and it appears original, i.e. no circuit board.

Mike -- What's most important is that the harness connections make contact with the correct components on the circuit board. On closer examination of the GM Service Manual schematic, I see that the plug on the amplifier is flipped from the orientation of the adjacent plug on the harness -- that means that the pink [power from ignition (run) or solenoid (start)] is on the right (viewed facing fins, plug on bottom), gray [signal from distibutor] on left, and black [output to ignition coil +ve] on top.

Now, INSIDE the black box, the key is to view the underside of the circuit board with the rear cover removed, plug at bottom, to see where the plug wires go. My '66 Service Manual (Fig 17i, Section 6Y-24) has such a photo. It can be seen that the wire coming from the gray (of the harness) goes to the vertical blade terminal near the lower center of the board. The pink goes to a horizontal blade connection to the right (and slightly higher) of the previous one. And the black goes to a vertical blade connector furthest right and higher on the board. The wires INSIDE the black box may not match the colors of the harness.

I have a replacement module (spare) from M & H in California, and their solid state drop-in replacement has the terminals in the same relative positions as the factory original. Their 4-page instructions confirm that the above connections are (respectively) from distributor / power in / output to coil.

So I would feel confident that the orientation of the colored wires in the harness plug, as described above, is safe.

Great, Thank you both for helping me out on this.
