    '70 clock resurrection

I'd like to try and get my clock working again before throwing in the towel and going the quartz route. I do plan on having the car Flight judged within a year.

When I turn the time adjusting knob, the clock works for a few seconds, so I think it close to working.

In the archives I've seen the term "clean and oil" as a possible way to bring them back. Clean and oil the entire mechanism or selected gears and shafts?

I plan to install a fuse to prevent the harness meltdown.

Thanks for any insight. Chris Hewitt #33863

    Chris,

Just remove the clock and send it to Jerry at The Clockworks. For about $50 you will have an original clock that will work for years.

Why not do it yourself? If you have a points file, you are all set.

Here is the URL to fixing a midyear. The '70 is basically the same but smaller.

Chris, as Mike says, this is an easy DIY job. I have repaired the clock in my 66 and my 72. The 72 took more time to take it out and reinstall it than it did to clean and repair it. You could hear the points close on my 72 clock but little or no movement. When I pulled it out, I found a lot of dust adhering to the movement. I bought some electrical contact cleaner and flooded the clock and movement with it until it ran clear. Quite messy but well worth the couple of bucks for cleaner. Make sure you remove the movement, hands and face before you do this. The 72 clock is still working nicely one year later.
