    lifting a C2

I am aware of the recommended sites for jacking up a 65. Is there any reason
not to jack the front end by placing the jack beneath the frame directly under
    the engine block?

You could bend/distort the formed crossmember depending on what you are using to lift at this portion of the frame. I have lifted my 68 and 70 in this area with my floor jack and use a large piece of 2/6 to spread the load. Using a lifting device with a small contact point could very well change the shape of the crossmember. Using the four lift points in the service manual are really the best to stay with.
