    Wheel Trim Rings

I have the original wheel trim rings for the 67 vette but they are not in good enough shape to be restored. Any ideas the best place to buy new ones. The replacements run different prices such as corvette central and long island. Any suggestions.

if the 67 is to be judged, you need to be aware of the difference between orig trim rings and the currently available replacement rings. orig's attach with four black oxide finished double-fingered clips at 90 degree intervals. replacements attach with about twenty or so individual triangular shaped pieces that are a part of the trim ring stamping. if its a driver, go with the replacements as a set of NOS originals will fetch 500 to 1000 of your frogskins. perhaps your originals can be repaired. There is a fellow in chambersburg, pa who can repain nearly any stainless piece. if you're interested in him , i can get his # from another MAC/NCRS member. mike

      Re: Wheel Trim Rings

I'm not sure they'll nip you for $1000 for a set of original trim rings.... But, there are a few other caveats to consider here too.

      (1) Originals with the four clips can make you swear when you have your wheels balanced and a given clip wants to bite the rim RIGHT where a front side weight is attached. The factory only balanced on the back side of the wheels as everything was fresh/new.

      (2) There are early and late versions of 'correct original' trim rings. This deals with where the four clips are positioned relative to the valve stem hole. The early cars (like yours) used trim rings with one of the four captive clips positioned right at the valve stem hole. Later versions of the trim ring (circa 1976) had the clips mounted such that the valve stem hole was between adjacent clips.

Soooo, when reading ad copy that describes trim rings as factory originals, you have to go a step further and call/inquire as to 'what year/period' their trim rings are from....

------Have it on good authority that some very well known restorers get clips off of junk rings and simply put the clips on the wheel. Then they put a repro style clincher ring on over top of the clips. If the judge doesnt look too close apparently it works.............Bill S

          Jack,

I've had my Corvettes and most recently my 70 Olds Cutlass balanced with the weights ONLY on the inside for the very reason you describe. Wheel and alignment specialists have verified that under 70-75 mph you'll never notice the difference, and I can verify that even at 72-73 mph for extended periods of time, I have yet to have a problem.

I insist they all be done this way. It avoids trim ring mounting problems, and also avoids trim ring/weight "squeaking" as the tire goes round and round.

Bill, believe me, It will not work. There are too many other differences.

              Mike-

I would love the name of the guy in Pennsylvania as I need my original rings restored. Unfortunately, one has a few small dents. Hopefully, this guy could repair that too.

              thanks

                Re: A Trim Ring Question

About three years ago (and a lot less Vette savey)when I first started purchasing parts for my 68, I picked up a set of rings that the fella claimed would fit.

Me worries dat maybe I gots took to da cleaners!

What are the differences between latter year rings and my 68? Deeper dish?

Will latter year rings still fit?

They do have the four clip design, so that's a plus anyway.
