    C1 odometer seize up

    Hi All,
My '62's odometer has refused to rotate past 899999. It reached this point normally but froze up here. There has been a bit of rotation noise in the speedometer cable occasionally but it does'nt last long. Can you give me some suggestions on how to repair it before I get wrench happy?
    Thanks, Pete

Remove shaft from speedo cable housing , clean with lacquer thinner, lubricate it SPARINGLY with AC Delco Speedo lubricant, reinstall and hope all functions. If it doesn't the problem is probably in the speedo/odometer head(in the cluster of the dash)or the drive or driven gear in the tranny tailshaft housing(very unlikely). if its the spedo/odometer head, send the unit to Corv Spec. of Maryland( they ad in driveline) for rebuild. good luck, mike

If the speedometer still works and the odometer doesn't, the problem is going to probably be in the little plastic gears that operate the odometer. You can visually inspect to se if any are broken or slipped out of place. If any gears are broken it will probably mean a trip to the speedo shop.

        I appreciate the info. guys,
I took a look inside and the small gears for the odometer had stripped out. I'm going to look around locally for a speedometer shop (in the San Francisco bay area). If not I'll give Corv.Spec. a call.
        Thanks, Pete

Pete, I've used North Hollywood Speedometer and Clock in North hollywood, CA and found their work is very good.
