I have just aquired a 1980 that I'm going to attempt to Bowtie. It has a painted on pin stripe on the body. Checking the judging manuals I cannot seem to find what/if the deduction would be for this non-factory pin stripe.

Re: Deduction for paint pin stripe
For Bowtie, likely very little. The question will be whether the paint UNDERNEATH the pinstripe is original or not. There are really no points for Bowtie; at least not like for Flight.
For Flight Judging, as it's not factory installed, there would be a deduction. I would guess a minimal number; no more than the 5 points I received for my dealer-installed luggage rack.

Re: Deduction for paint pin stripe
steve i have a 74 BB that is a potential bowtie candidate and it was similiarly customized in 74 by my friend, the orig owner.I felt the paint would get no originality points in bowtie arena(at least thats the call i'd make if i were judging it) so i painstakingly sanded(l200 grit) then buffed the orig paint. only buffed thru to primer in a couple of places which should not affect originality.mike- Top

Re: Deduction for paint pin stripe *TL*
For flight judging non-factory pin stripes, lettering and similar owner inspired additions were recently changed. See Roy Sinor's column in The Restorer, Winter 2003, Volume 29, #3. It is now a lot more than a minor deduction. That same column has a body fiberglass change as well.

Re: Deduction for paint pin stripe
If the pin stripe is tape and not paint, it can be safely removed, if you choose to. My neighbor just removed a ton of decals/pin stripes on his conversion van using a wheel mounted on his electric drill. The wheel is made out of a material very similar to a wooden pencil eraser. It took the decal/stripe off without damaging the underlying paint. Just a FWIW!

Ouch!
Stephen,
Note, though, that it applies to Flight Judging. I would send a note to Roy (or call him) to see what the rule would be for Bowtie Judging. They are really an "apples vs. oranges" comparison.
Now, if you're trying to do both Flight and Bowtie, as I am, then you'll need to remove the stripes. Be careful!
