C2 1963 brake master cylinder

Should the master cylinder be painted? My car has old black paint on a portion of the casting.

I believe it to be unpainted, natural metal. To preserve the look you can try clear paint after the old paint is removed. The cap is plated as well as the washer and thumb screw or the bolt if it's a power brake car.

My 63 is cast with no paint on it. The lid is a silver color. It must have some kind of plating.
