    Oil cannister woes

I found an oil cannister for my 62 at the local bone yard about a week ago. It was in good shape and it appeared as if everything was there. I cleaned it up and applied a semi flat paint. It looked great ! Today I changed the oil and installed it by holding the cannister and drawing the bolt up. When I started the vehicle, oil ran from the bolt at a steady flow. When I took it off, I noticed that the spring and bell-shaped retainer that is crimped to the bolt was bottomed out. I tapped the bolt with a hammer and it sprung back up. Am I missing something here, or did I install it wrong, or does it need to be rebuilt? If it does need to be rebuilt, who offers that service or where can I get those parts to rebuild it myself.I also need to know how to get it apart to be restored. Thanks in advance! On the verge of going to a spin-on kit.
    Best regards, Jon

I think there is a brass or copper flat washer that interfaces between head of bolt and cannister. mike

Yea Mike your right! I was so excited to find one that I never even checked for the washer. I didn't even check when it came time to paint. Well, spend and learn. At least I'm only out a twenty and a decal. I've made bigger blunders. The search goes on. Thanks Mike

P.s. Anyone know how to disassemble a cannister without excessive damage?

        Jon,
My '56 cannister will disassemble. The inverted this steel funnel has a little notch along side the center hole. The long bolt has a small "pinched" piece of metal sticking out on one side. Pushing the funnel downward against the spring and aligning (by rotating) the notch with the "pinched" area on the bolt will permit the funnel to be released from the bolt. I've also tried this method on other 131 cannisters and it wouldn't work. Regards,
