    '67 435hp documentation HELP

I am in the market for a '67 435hp convertible project (yes, I know they are hard to find, but I found one) I also want a car with documentation. The casr I have found has a partial tank sticker--it shows the 435hp option among other options, the issue is the sticker doesn't show the VIN for the car, it is missing. The numbers on the block and date are correct. The seller has documentation of the previous two owners (all the previous owners) stating in a hand written letter that the car was originally a 435hp car. He also has the name of the dealership where the car was bought(if you can do anything with that i don't know). Is this enough documentation for this car to be considered an original car with documentation? Another question I have is the trim tag on the car has a body time build code of "901", I thought all the codes started with a letter? And the stamps of all the numbers on the trim tag are about a 1/8th of an inch lower(that is the numbers are not in a straight line with the words--style, paint etc) could the codes have been mis-stamped at the factory? This car has been setting for 20 years in a storage trailer and I wouldn't think anyone would have changed the trim tag years ago, plus the car is down to the bare glass. Any information would be helpful or if you think I should move onto another car. This car has several panels off of the front with correct gm panels to fix otherwise is a pretty complete car in need of a restoration. It would take 30K to buy it.

    Thanks

None of the 67 tank stickers had the VIN on them, so you'll look forever if you think you need that piece of information.

If the car is complete with the original motor, trans and rear end, stop looking.

With what you have, there are a couple ways to help double-check what you're getting. The tank sticker will have the paint & trim information, which you can compare against the trim tag. They should be the same. I don't know what "901" could represent. For 67, the paint combinations started with a "9". There was no "901". The trim combinations started with a "4" (or "std").

The build date combinations did start with a letter, for example "A10", "G23", etc. Check the body build date against the VIN. They should correspond on the months. Depending on the tank sticker condition, you may be able to discern the 'order date' and 'expected delivery' on the sticker and compare those to the VIN and body build date on the trim tag.

I can't be too sure, but 30K seems a bit high for a project car. But, that's an opinion. Good luck.

        My best advice would be

You need to sort out the trim tag to your satisfaction. If you have seen the tag and it really has a date of 901 then a call to Al Grenning might be helpful. If the owner reported to you that no it could be a mistake of his or her part.

Partial tank stickers are common, the paper did not always hold up so well. It is also a popular trick of the dishonest. Does the document have any dates visible, the order no, all this is very helpful. Is the hand written no. visible? Does the paper have serrated edges? All this stuff will be an aid to help you determine authenticity. I would again suggest you fax a copy to Mr. Grenning, I have always found him to be polite and helpful. His name is probably listed on the user index page here. If not send me a note and I can get you his contact info.

30K for original drivetrain project 435 sound like a good deal to me, but as you obviously already know, doing your homework so you know exactly what you are buying is paramount, particularly with 67 435's.

If the car has limited owners, which one of them has the protect-o-plate (warranty book) for the car. All the pertinent info on the drivetrain is on the POP.

This car appears like the one listed on Ebay recently. Its all in the paperwork, dollars $ sense! You will put at least $50K
If the car has none its paperwork/restored its worth $50K-$70K
If the car has ALL of its paperwork/restored its worth $100K-$120K
If the car is black and has white interior add another $10K
            And that's the real world.
