    1963 Shock #

    Folks,

Have found a set of rear shocks for my 1963 and want to be sure this is correct application. The number the individual gave me is 4940607. I checked my 1953-76 Corvette Only Parts Catalog dated January 1973 and the part number I need is 4940459. No mention of the other number as either a replacement or anything. Is this a correct application for my 1963? Thanks in advance.

    Rick------

GM #4940607 was never a SERVICE shock part number. However, it is the shock part number that came in a SERVICE shock part number box. With SERVICE shocks, the part number for the shock, AS CATALOGUED and specified by GM, is the part on the box and NOT the part on the shock. There is no cross-reference that I know of for shock part numbers with, AS-CATALOGUED, SERVICE shock part numbers. If that's confusing, that's because it is.

GM #4940607 is ONE of the shock part numbers that was/is supplied in a box labeled GM #4940459. I have several lifetimes supply of NOS 4940459 shocks manufactured at different times [NONE for sale], but I haven't the time to dig them out right now to confirm any other numbers actually embossed on the shocks. I can tell you that some of them carry the 4940607 number. Actually, I'm supposed to be on a "moratorium" from this board, anyway, in order to attend to "other projects", so "digging into" parts stocks is definitely out, for the time being.

In any event, GM #4940607 is certainly NOT an original part number for a shock used in PRODUCTION for any 1963 Corvette. GM #4940459 IS the current SERVICE part number for the rear shocks for 63-77 Corvettes equipped with HD suspension (F-40, F-41, FE-7). The shocks in the box currently may or may not carry the 4940607 number. I suspect that they do, but I'm not certain of that.

      Joe,

thanks for the response - that is what I suspected was the case - think I am going to go ahead and buy these "rear" shocks and the the gentleman says he has the front shocks also - just didn't have the numbers handy - says they are in the original GM boxes
