Thanks to everyone for the comments on the engine paint. I also thought the Hirsch paint was to pink or salmon. Therefore, I still don't know what to use. Joe, what brand of paint do you use?

      Best Wishes to all!

        Bob-----

I like the Seymour Chevrolet engine orange available from Paragon and other paint sources. However, although I haven't used it, I've heard many good reports about the Quanta paint, including several that have been posted here. So, I think that I'd have to suggest that you use either the Seymour or the Quanta.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised to learn that the NAPA paint is a Seymour product. Seymour custom-packages paint under many other brands and, I believe, sells more paint under other brand names than their own. I like Seymour the best of those that I've tried, but I haven't tried Quanta so I might like that as much or more.

              Re: Engine Paint

              Bob, et al-----

One more thing on engine paint: some of the earlier mid-year small blocks (like the 63-65)used a Chevrolet orange that had more red in it than that used in later years. Some of the later C1s might have, too, but I haven't paid as much attention to those engines. In my "paint test" I found that the brands which had more red in them and seemed more like the above-referenced were Krylon and Aervoe. Krylon is available everywhere. Aervoe is sold at Orchard Supply Hardware Stores, at least, on the west coast.

Personally, I think that the Krylon and Aervoe are "dead ringers" for the 63-65 small block Chevrolet orange. However, after about 1965, the Chevrolet orange became decidely more "orange" with very little red in it (but, it still had SOME red in it).

                Re: 1965 Engine Paint

                Joe,
I'll completely agree with you regarding the tending toward red look on the '65. I didn't think so at first, but I just came from the garage and now agree. My '65 color just doesn't look like the later Chevrolet orange engines.

I have two cans of Quanta, but I'm not going to used them until I spray a little on my original valve colors to check the red versus orange issue.

Perhaps the Krylon or Aervoe would be a better choice for me.

As always, thanks for your input.

                Regards,
                Gene

Joe I think Plasti-Kote is the one that now sells Chevrolet Orange and Chevrolet Red Orange and the red orange is darker and less gloss. Lyle

I just finished painting my '61 oil pan with Quanta Chevy Orange. It flowed on evenly and did not run like some other spray cans.

                      Re: Offer to Joe Lucia

                      Joe,
I'm happy to read that there is so much interest in engine paint. After all, the engine compartment does get a lot of attention.

As I mentioned in a previous posting, I have two cans of Quanta engine orange and if it will help everyone else, I'll make you this offer. I probably have more time than you do to perform this evaluation.

If you have a test sample (primed sheet metal) that you are willing to send me, I will spray it with Quanta engine orange (you can tell me how many coats) and I will return the sample to you for analysis and feedback to the group.

Just bang my Email button if you would like my help and I'll give you my shipping address.

Best regards to all interested parties,
                      Gene

                        Gene-----

As a matter of fact, I just checked this afternoon and I have 2 cans of the Quanta Chevrolet orange paint that I got at Bloomington. I forgot that I did this then this little voice in the back of my mind said: "didn't you buy some of that Quanta paint once-upon-a-time and never make up a paint sample as you intended?" Well, the answer, apparently, is "YES".

Now, the real problem is going to be finding some more of those primed, sheet metal pieces that I used as my "standard" substrate for this test. I stopped at Orchard Supply today and they have been discontinued. I KNOW that I have a BUNCH more around here somewhere, though. So, finding these will be more of a challenge than the paint; I've already found that. I was hoping that buying more from Orchard would be an easier alternative than looking for the ones that I KNOW I have.

                            Joe:

I should have mentioned up front the paint was for a 57'. Where can the Quanta brand be purchased? I will wait as long as I can for more discussion on this board before I decide.

                            Many Thanks!!

You get the Quanta paint directly from them. I think that their web-site is www.quantaproducts.com. If you're at Carlisle, I would expect that they'll be there somewhere.
