Hotmail may be having a problem. I couldn't get to an alternative hotmail email address I use on occasion.

The news is reporting today that a worm is creating havoc in cyberspace. One raport said that a state's (PA I think?) entire DMW system was taken down.
Microsoft is supposed to have a patch, but I don't know if Norton et al. can catch it, so don't open any attachments that you aren't sure should be there.

This "worm" doesn't spread through attachments to e-mails. It can infect any "vulnerable" computer connected to the internet with no action, whatsoever, on the part of the computer user. To prevent it, the download available from Microsoft will render one's computer "invulnerable" (to this, particular, virus). Norton and MacAffee anti-virus programs may prevent it from infecting so-protected computers without the Microsoft upgrade.In Appreciation of John HinckleyComment
