i have a 1954 last week replaced starter solnoid because solnoid would not engage just chatter like it was trying to engage. car started twice no problem .. third time i tried to start the car it began chattering like it did with old solnoid. i ran a wire from hot side of battery to small nut on solnoid. solnoid engages and engine turns fine . today i replaced starter relay this did not fix the problem . solnoid will not engage the fly wheel just more chatter . any one have any ideas? chester bartko dundalk md.

You probably now own three fully functional solenoids. Your problem is in the wiring from the ignition switch to the solenoid. Either bad connections, broken wire strands or partial short to ground has caused too much voltage drop for the solenoid to operate properly. Trace the wiring all the way back and find the source of the lost volts. When you hot-wired it to the battery, you got all the voltage the solenoid wanted. Good Luck.- Top
