    C-3 Alternator stator finish

I have my alternator apart and would like to put the finish back on the exposed edge of the stator assembly. Was it some type of varnish or other material? I like the natural look of the case and it does not need a total restoration but the yellow-brown finish is gone. Lyle

Lyle - I went to a local motor repair shop that rewinds electric motors. They use a two part epoxy specialized winding varnish product that is used to coat field windings after rewound, and it worked great. As I recall, it was about $20 a pint, and does age and harden, but it did wonders on my stator edge and I also used it on the field windings. Looked just like new GM appearance, not the red look sometimes obtained. Later, at a local bearing shop, I found a simpler product in a spray can, but I haven't tried it. Similar idea, easier to use, maybe not as durable as the two part epoxy system...Craig
