    C2 - '67 tank sticker

As a frequent reader of this site, I see discussions and references to the 'tank sticker'. As original owner '67 L-79, is there any value in me trying to see it? Or would one have to remove the tank to access it?

This is purely for curiosity's sake; no other reason.

    What's your opinion?

    Thanks.

Tom: one can usually see if the tank sticker is still present by removing the rubber boot surrounding the filler neck and using a flashlite and mirror. If its still there(the glue they used to affix them was water soluble) , i'd be inclined to drop the tank and carefully remove and preserve it. good luck, mike

Tom: that document is a carbon copy and VERY fragile, it deteriorates and fades over time, depending on whether the Corvette has been subject to the outside elements much. I believe it adds a lot of value and puts to rest any doubt as to the authenticity of your particular cars options. I would recommend carefully removing it and preserving it, it contains some really neat information.

Thanks for your opinions, gents. It appears that recovering the tank sticker would be of REAL value, before it deteriorates completely.

So, dropping the tank? I wouldn't have a problem tackling that job, as it "seems" fairly straight forward, or am I kidding myself?

Can be done with car on blocks? Or lift? I'm guessing here, but drop the spare tire carrier, un-do the straps, gas line, and wiggle it out?

          Tom-----

The tank sticker may be the ONLY documentation that you have regarding the car's as-delivered configuration. If you happen to have a copy of the car's original window sticker, then the tank sticker may be rather moot. Most folks don't have an original window sticker, though.

You MIGHT also find a copy of the "build sheet" (i.e. another copy of the "tank sticker") under the dash. Sometimes, especially for cars that have not had previous under-dash work performed, there will be a copy there. If so, it will be in a lot better condition than the copy on the tank. Look for this first. Above the steering column and on top of the heater box are 2 places these are often found, but they may be other places tucked up behind the dash. If you find this copy, the tank sticker becomes "moot".

Removal of the fuel tank involves removal of the spare tire carrier and removal of the rear exhaust pipe/muffler assemblies. After doing this, removal of the tank is relatively easy. Exhaust system removal is usually the "sticking point" in this whole thing.

            Tom -

It's a little more involved than that (exhaust system has to move rearward, remove filler neck on coupe, etc.) - see the procedure in the Chassis Service Manual.

How To Preserve It When You Get It Off?

I have a pretty nice tank sticker off of my 67 L79. Should I just put it in a plastic sleeve or lamintate it? What do you all recommend?

              Thanks,
              Jace Holt

                Do NOT Laminate....

or put in a plastic sleeve. There was an article on the Yankee Lady forum by a document restorer/preservationist who stated that the laminate puts off 'plasticizers' which further deteriorate the document.

In 97, I 'sandwiched' my sticker between two pieces of Lucite. I bought them from a local plastics supplier, which was in the Yellow Pages. The pieces were approximately 1" larger than the sticker on each side. I drilled holes at the corners and inserted screws with retainers, which resemble rivets. I don't know what they are called, but they are available at Lowe's or Home Depot.

I store the assembly in black cloth to further keep out the light, as it damages documents also. I don't know if the Lucite off-gases these 'plasticizers' but it seems to work really well. The Lucite pieces are 1/2" thick and prevents bending, creasing, etc when being handled. Laminate won't prevent bending, etc.

Jace: I use archival acid free paper to lay the Corvette Order Copy sheet on and insert this in a plastic sleeve. I took a color copy of it to preserve the printing, actually enhanced it and the photocopy looks better than original, and I use this copy for display purposes at the shows. Keep the original in a drawer out of direct light.
