    torque spec - oil pan

After snaping off a bolt on my front cover, went to Sears and bought an inch-pound torque wrench. Went to install the pan today. Instructions said torque the corners to 12 ft-lbs and the rails to 9 ft-lbs, which I convert to 144 inch-lbs and 108 inch-lbs respectively (that's about all the higher math I can handle). torquing in stages, 10 ft-lbs (or 120 inch-lbs) looked like it was distorting the gasket at the corners (using old-style multi-piece gasket). Too much torque? Should I pull it all, clean off the permatex and try something else? Thanks.

The GM-published torque values that I find are 80 lb/in for the 1/4" bolts and 65 lb/in for the 5/16" bolts (that's right; less torque for the 5/16" than the 1/4" which makes no sense to me). In any event, I've seen the specs that you're using in aftermarket publications and I think that they should work alright. You will get some deformation of the pan at the bolt holes, especially the 1/4" bolt holes which are un-reinforced, when the bolts are torqued down. That's pretty much the way it is. That's why later small blocks used re-inforcing rails on either side to spread the compressive force.

Re: torque spec - oil pan

There was a post in the last 2 - 3 months that gave a part number for a one piece pan gasket. I used it and had success. It came with new bolts (not correct) and a neat little tool that was 4 plastic studs that you install first and the pan slides over and is temporarily held in place until you get the other bolts installed. The other point to make is to flatten out all the depressions in the pan that have been growing with every over torquing in the past. Good luck...

I have read about these but have had trouble finding them. Where did you get yours?

I ordered it through the local Napa parts store. I think it was a permatex and it was in the $40 range... check the archives for the part numbers, there were two; one early and the other late model.

            Jim and Mark-----

For 57-74 small blocks WITH ORIGINAL OIL PANS, the gasket is Fel-Pro #OS-34509-T OR Victor # OS-30568 RLH. For 75-79 small blocks OR earlier with SERVICE oil pans GM #360866 or 359942, the gasket is Fel-Pro OS-34510-T.

These are easily orderable through any Fel-Pro or Victor gasket dealer.

              Addendum

Also, these gaskets have torque-limiting inserts at all of the bolt holes. Use ONLY the torque specs found on an instruction sheet packaged with the gasket.

                  Re: Addendum

Thanks to all. I'm just not happy with how the multi-piece gasket came out, and since this is a driver I will go with a one-piece gasket.
