    '57 antenna location

Could some of you corvetters out there measure the distance from the tail light housing or opening to the centre line of the antenna? When I measure this distance I get 5 1/2" but I don't think this is correct. I removed the paint in this area and I can't see any repaired holes. It is possible that this car was not originally radio equipped. Thanks.

Brian, I just measured the distance on my '56, which should be the same as your '57, I think. I measured from the forwardmost edge of the taillight chrome piece to the centerline of the antenna. I came up with 3 and 15/16 inches. Hope this helps. I also hope mine is right!!!

Check inside the trunk with a light and mirror. That will answer the questions. Lots of these cars came without a radio. They wanted a ton of $ for that Wonderbar back then. Best, Dennis

sounds like you have a radio delete 57 or the left rear quarter was replaced and it then became radio delete. Is there a piece of cardboard on the back side of the where the speaker assembly would have been on a radio equipped vet? what about a block-off plate? If its radio delete(You ought to remove more paint in the vicinity of the tailite), you will have one less headache at P.V. time if that is your intention.

Measuring the same as Steve, I got 3-3/4", but I can't say that's the correct measurement. My 56 has been around the block to many times to be considered "original". Everything on the car is "original", just not originally on my car when it left St. Louis..

My 56 measured 3-3/4" like Joe's. Mine's also been around the block a few times, but I can't imagine that it was a radio delete car since it has all the other bells and whistles.

That measurement of 3 3/4" sounds about right. When I tried to fit the antenna I coulnd't get it vertical. It was leaning forward. I checked inside the fender and I can't see any sign of repair. It is possible that the fender was replaced at one time. When I purchased the car it was apart, many boxes. It's been apart since the late 70's. There are no blank-off plates for the dash or behind the speaker. Actually it came with 2 radios, one speaker (no speaker power-pack) and an antenna. There is no antenna lead cable. Are there any other tell tale signs to indicate if it originally came with a radio? Thanks.

Not conclusive but a thought which might add to the body of evidence; Is there a wound coil of copper behind the wheel bearing cap on the front wheels ? I think this was placed on cars that had radios to help with static discharge . Any evidence of ignition shielding or the attending brackets ?
