I have a 58 245HP 2x4 which is completely stock. However, it is fouling plugs as is typical of the rich mixture nature of these cars. I want to keep the car stock in appearance (not going for judging and the car is driven on any nice day). A friend suggested adding the MSD 6a box to the stock dual point system for better combustion of the rich mixture. The carbs are rebuilt and the car idles/runs fine til the plugs start to foul. Any opinions re the msd 6a box or other ignition suggestions appreciated. Thanks, Ken

I have the same setup on my 57 and alot of experience with the problem you have from years ago with my 62, I found that switching to a long reach plug such as Champions solved the problem completely. You may want to use a plug with a higher heat range too. I am using Champions in my 57 now and no problem. I am also running a stock appearing high output coil (chrome Plated to boot). No fouling has yet to showed up. I don't recall the prefix letters on the plugs but 13YC is what you want to start with. Good luck- Top

The coldest plug you should use is the AC 45 or equivalent and and extended tip plug such as the AC 45S or equivalent will be more resistant to fouling.
There's nothing wrong with the ignition. You just need the right plug.

I have heard this story over and over for 35 and more years , most after having a one carb vett or two carb vett rebuilt, and it always comes back to the fact that the metering rods are not ajusted right or they were replaced using the wrong ones.Original un-screwed with carbs din't foul the plugs.- Top

I also have a 58 270 Hp motor running the 245 Hp carbs. Mine used to foul the plugs all the time until I did the following. 1) went to a plug that is the equivalent of a 46 2) adjusted the idle lean ( i found this in a corvette book in a garage sale), it says to adjust the idle as normal then lean each screw 2 flats, this will give a rough shop idle but good road idle 3) i went to a complete msd system and velcroed the box to the top of the radio

Plug fouling was a major field issue on early 2x4 C1's originally factory-equipped with 43's and 44's, and production plugs were switched to 46's to cure it, although that change never showed up in the Owner's Manuals or in the ST-12. I have a copy of the original factory Service Letter that notified the dealers of the change (and instructed them to change to 46's on customer-complaint units) somewhere in my files.- Top

My dual 4 car fouled plugs quickly. Part of my problem may be a bit more cam than what the car originally had. Fouling was very bad if I took it up into the mountains. Anyway, I could not fix it with the hotter plug, and installed the MSD box. I have not fouled the plugs for several years. It smoothed out the idle, and seems to accelerate better. I hid the box behind the passenger kick panel.- Top

FYI... I installed MSD tach drive distributor, MSD 6a box and MSD coil. My original 327/340hp '62 idles and excelerates better than my 2003 Silverado. Box is behind kick panel. Currently doing the same on 327/300hp '66 coupe.- Top

I installed the MSD system in my 1960 270HP two years ago with telephone help from Doug Flaten. No more fouled plugs and runs better than it ever did.The box
