    C1 1960 Windshield Weatherstrip

Does anyone have a remedy or know what causes cracking in the rubber weatherstrip that surrounds the windshield glass? I've replaced this weatherstrip a couple of times since I've owned my 1960 and can't seem to prevent the cracking. I was wondering if it's caused from using typical window cleaners, such as Windex, dry rot, or maybe the poor quality of the rubber. As everyone knows, removing the windshield to replace this weatherstrip is not an easy task.

    Thanks
    Pete

In addition to the possible causes, you cold add Ultraviolet light, one of the biggest causes of brittleness.

      Dino and Pete----

Yes, UV is definitely one of the biggest causes of rubber deterioration. For example, the windshield wiper blades in my original owner 69 are still the ORIGINAL blades installed at St. Louis. The windshield wiper door protects them from UV light.

I really doubt that windshield washing solutions would produce any significant deterioration of the rubber in the part you describe.

I replaced the WSW on my62 5 years ago and have been using 303 Protectant on the weatherstrips, tires and convertible top. They claim its a sunscreen for all rubber, plastic, and vinyl. Works for me.

          Pete...

I recently ordered a new windshield channel weatherstrip, The Supplier stated it had "o-zone protective ingredients". Not sure what they are,but will let you know in a few years. You might check this out with a good weathersrip supplier?

Guys, Thank you for your feedback.

I forgot all about UV rays. That's probably a big factor in the rubber embrittlement and cracking. I don't recall if my weatherstrip has either "UV" or other protection since I installed it several years ago. I have tried AmorAll to try to keep it supple, but with no luck. I'll give the 303 protectant a try and maybe that will make it last a bit longer. When I'm feeling energetic, I guess I'll tackle the weatherstrip replacement again. Hopefully, the newer materials have improved.
