Gene-dont even attempt to remove these bolts without putting lots of heat on the welded nut.A propane torch will work fine.Brian.

    Re: There out!

    Gentlemen,
Both bolts are out and the spare tire carrier is down. The penetrant made it possible. No heat, no pipe wrenches, no torn up bolts. If you use penetrants, you have to know about a product called PB PENETRATING CATALYST. This is the best "fastener blaster" that I have ever used. It is available from about any place that sells Liquid Wrench.

By the way, there are no lock nuts on the carrier-lid bolts. They do have headed area and a lock washer that tightens against the frame.

Thanks to all who responded and helped.

I would venture a guess that the lock nuts installed on Bill's car were done as a quick and easy way to increase the effective length of the bolts approx 1/2 inch when trying to put a wider then original spare tire into the tub.
