    69 AC Compressor

Anyone have some recommendations as to where to get an original AC compressor rebuilt? I live in the North NJ area and would like to stay local if possible.

    Thanks,

Do you need a complete rebuild or just the front seals replaced with the updated seal and pulley bearing/clutch replacement? I read in a magazine or saw a post where there is a business in Florida that repairs the A6 compressors. My 70's compressor is original and still cools but does have front seal leakage that needs replacement.

My original siezed up about 8 years ago.I think it needs a complete rebuild. I'm not sure what is wrong with it. I put a rebuilt one on and it is now leaking oil. So I thoght I would have the original one rebuilt and put it back on the car. I had a friend send one to and outfit in Florida (I don't recall the name) but he is very dissatisfied with them. Actually, he sent it to them 3 times and it still leaks oil. I will do a search on the tech board for info on this info.

      Regards,

A6 rebuilds used to a common machine shop service. Then, folks opened MASS quantity reverse assy lines in low labor areas of the country to supply the needs of the autoparts chain stores. The local rebuilders couldn't effectively compete with the mass rebuilders (volume cost structure), so most simply stopped offering the overhaul service.

But, if you start calling machine shops in your neck of the woods, the odds are reasonable you'll find a 'good ole boy' that still has the tools (parts availability isn't a problem) and know how to do the job for you. But, he'll probably admit he can't be cost competitive with a 'swap-out' repair from NAPA, Four Seasons, Etc.

On doing the rebuild, the Achiles' Heel of the A6 is its front bearing/seal. Originals were bronze/steel and had a rather short life. LATE in the life cycle of the A6 (just prior to the onset of the R4), Delco offered a ceramic bearing/seal. This has superior longevity characteristics.

The mass rebuilders, to keep their low cost profile advantage, typically use the old metal front bearing/seal. It gets you through a 12-month warranty.... So, it's useful to ask ANYONE who's rebuilding your compressor what bearing/seal technology they're going to give you....

You can repair by substitution using Delco (now Delphi) and they will give you the latest/greatest technology, but their price for a rebuilt A6 (trade in your current core) will be significantly higher than that of the low price guys....

If memory serves me correct, the Corvette air conditioner compressor is a smaller compressor than what is on Chev cars. Auto Zone's tool loan program used to have the special tools that are used to remove the front bearing and the seal. Have always wanted to successfully replace the front seal in the compressor.
