    Chemical Cleaning

I heard that the following chemical solution can be made at home to clean paint, oxidation, etc. off of parts. Does anyone have an opinion regarding the safety (primary) and effectiveness (secondary) of this?

The solution consists of taking Arm & Hammer Washing Soda and mixing it with water. With a 12-volt battery charger, take the negative and attach it to a piece of stainless steel and immerse in the water-soda solution.

Attach the positive terminal to the part and immerse the part in the solution. Of course, don't allow the + or - to contact.

I was informed that this is some sort of "hydrogen generator" and will clean parts to bare metal.

I think this process will remove oxidation (rust) but not heavy oils or grease. Either that or it's a cold fusion process.

This system works very well for cleaning rusty steel parts. For heavy rust, it may take many hours, but it will eventually remove it all. It usually removes paint as well. Thick grease oil and dirt need to be scraped off, but the part doesn't need to be completely clean.Take a look at this website, or search for electrolytic rust removal. There's quite a bit of info available.

Great info! I'm glad I asked since I got the wrong info on the polarity. Where can I get Washing Soda?

Baking soda is an off-the-shelf item at every grocery store!

            BUT...

Washing sode and baking soda are not the same thing.

Arm and Hammer Washing Soda is not only available at your local grocery store, and is good for rust removal, it is excellent for cleaning clothes.

Buy lots and lots and lots of it. It's great stuff.
