Does anyone reproduce the rear spring (exact repro.) for the 63 250hp. vette? It is an early model if that makes any difference. Thank you #24633

Re: rear spring for a 63
The GM "restoration parts" approved source is Eaton Spring I Detroit. There was a thread a while back that you might track down to the effect that the spring they produce is functionally correct, but not exact. The 63-64 cars used part # 3794095 spring which was superceded by PN 3850839. (9 leaf regular suspension springs) Single leafs were serviced for a while, with the main leaf part number being 3853020. I have had good success finding a spring from another 63-early 70's Corvette and using the best leaves from both sets along with a new liner kit to rebuild mine. New bushings when installing the spring will also help to restore the original ride height. I haven't personally inspected the Eaton, so I don't know if you could try to get just a new main leaf from them to provide a platform to build on or not. The usual problem with replacement springs is that they lack the upturned ends that the originals carry, but the main leaf is not built this way on the originals, so a replacement should be easier to duplicate.- Top

Re: rear spring for a 63
"C.E."----
1963 Corvettes use a unique, one-year-only spring, GM #3794095. This spring is a "one stage" spring which has all of the leaves arched, unlike the "two-stage" design used from 64-on which has the top three leaves "flat". Eaton Detroit Springs is the "authorized" GM Reproduction Parts licensee for this spring. I've found that Eaton's springs are not always faithful reproductions, but their GM #3850839 reproduction(64-74) is about as close as you can get. With a lot of extra work, it can be made to be pretty close appearance-wise.
If you contact them regarding a spring make sure that you tell them that you want a spring made to the 3794095 specification, NOT the 3850839 specification. If they tell you that they're the same, tell them to check their GM drawings and specs. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
