After having our master cylinder stainless sleeved we rebuilt it with a United kit.The rebuild seemed tight at first then it loosened up some.We bled the brakes and had a good firm pedal but was surprised to find it leaking out the back of the master cylinder onto the floormat. We tore the master cylinder down and noticed some scuff marks in the cylinder.Do we, A- try another kit. B-trash this master cylinder and order a new one.Note, this is a replacement master cylinder from about 1973.Should we look for an original or use a new replacement if we are to have our car judged. Thanks in advance,Don #31753

Re: 64 Master Cylinder Problems
Don----
If the master cylinder stainless steel sleeved bore is truly "scuffed", it's probably history. However, if it truly is damaged, it would almost have to have been damaged when it was sleeved. That's because the master cylinder kit that you installed should have contained nothing but an aluminum piston and rubber seals. Neither of these are hard enough to scuff, scrape or damage a stainless steel bore. I think I'd send it back to the rebuilder.
If you choose to get a new one, be advised that new master cylinders for a 64 are not available from GM. They MAY be available from Bendix or Wagner, but the configuration would probably not be original, although it would be VERY functional(NEW master cylinders usually work PERFECTLY).In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
