    6 spd trans

I am considering installing a Camaro 6 spd trans in my non-original T-top '72 small block. How do I determine if the trans is in decent condition at a swap meet/flea market? Can this be done and what are the items to look at/for? As a point of reference, I have had experience rebuilding my own 4 spd trans. Any information will be appreciated. Thanks, John.

Richmond Gear in upstate N>Y> have NOS ZF-6s for 5K. its a pretty largew unit and your floor pan would need modification as well as driveshaft. I think the ZF-6 if far stronger than the camero or C-5 six speeds for that meatter. if you want their address, let me know and i'll look it up for you. good luck, mike p.s. buying a used tranny is usually analogous to buying a pig in a polk.Tranny usually needs tore down and inspected apart, even then you can miss damaged parts by visually inspecting.

I agree with Mike; the ZF is a better transmission than the T-56 used for 93-02 Camaros and 97-03 Corvettes. However, both the ZF and the T-56 are very large transmissions. Installing one in a Corvette never originally equipped with one is a MAJOR effort and MUCH modification will be necessary. These transmissions use an internal shifter and, as such, the shifter position is, essentially, fixed. It will not likely end up in a position in a C3 that you're going to be happy with.

If you're going to go with a non-stock transmission, I would recommend a Richmond 5 speed or, even, a Richmond 6 speed. The 5 speed is the easiest to adapt to a C3, but the 6 speed Richmond is still a lot easier to install than a ZF or a T-56.

John on the Corvette Forum there is a transmission add for modified transmissions that will fit your 72. They modify the shifter location to fit your car. Did not check the price since I plan on shifting my ole Muncie for a lot more years.

John, Keisler Automotive has a trans conversion that might be just what you're looking for. I have seen one installed in a C2 and it looked completely stock from the interior. I think it is a direct bolt in installation. Check out www.keislerauto.com . Telephone 865/609-8187. They are in Knoxville.

John, I recently participated in the swap of the Keisler 5 speed into a 1965 NOM coupe. It took the better part of the day and the owner is thrilled. Fit like a glove and the shifter came out in the proper spot for the stock console. Very neat set-up. I think the cost was in the $2,800 range.
