    C3 81 4 speed manual Reverse Gear

I cannot get the Reverse gear on.

All other gears work fine but no reverse.

Where should I look at first??

    Thanks.

Does the shifter interlock work allowing the shifter to be moved into the reverse position?

Actually I can shift the stick to the right by pulling the interlock but it is impossible to push upward in order to get Reverse engaged.

It looks like something is blocked not allowing the stick/gear to be engaged.

I hope it clarifies the problem

Yes, that does clarify things a bit. Apparently, the reverse interlock is working. That pretty much means that the problem is with the shifter linkage or the transmission, itself. At this point, what I would recommend doing is to, with the shifter in neutral, remove the transmission shift rod at the reverse shifter lever. Then, try shifting the transmission into reverse by moving the shift lever on the transmission. If you're able to do it, then the problem is not with the transmission, itself, and must be due to a problem with the linkage. In that case, you'll have to remove the shifter assembly from the car for repair or replacement.

If you are unable to shift into reverse at the transmission lever, then the problem is internal to the tranmission and will require removal and disassembly to inspect and repair.

          Addendum

One other thing that I just thought of: check the transmission interlock cable which runs from the steering column just ahead of the firewall to the top of the reverese shifter lever on the transmission. That could be binding or "hung up" in some way and preventing the reverse lever from being moved by the shifter.

            Thanks Joe.
            I will try that first.
