    1962 Gas Tank

Bought a new tank from Quanta Products, went in ok, not the easiest job I've every tackeled, but now the fiberglass cover won't fit. It's as if the tank is too tall. Straps are tight, everything works OK, no leaks, but no way the lid is going back on. What did I do wrong?

If you got the old straps back on, the tank is not too tall.

    Where is the cover interfering?

Had the same problem on a car I was getting ready to sell. Supplier said "we've never had that kid of a problem before". Old tank went right in and cover went back on--new tank went back in, cover wouldn't go all the way down. Car was sold with cover not flush.

you need to center the tank in the hole. if it is too far to one side it will hit the top cover. been there.

Ok, the tank is centered and the lid is hitting on the back of the tank. It appears that the tank could slid forward, but when I do that then the straps don't seem to reach. Why are there indentations in the tank if the straps don't fit in them? Thanks for all the help.

Always wondered that myself... Same on a 24 gallon tank car... Dennis

I refurbished the original tank on my '62 last year. The original straps came out of and went back into the grooves in the tank. I don't see how the straps could reach any other way. It's a stretch as it is to get them reconnected. The straps just barely make it with the shorter distance provided by the grooves. Don't see how you could ever get the straps connected unless they were in right.

Sounds like we're talking about 2 different things. But maybe that's a solution to your problem.
