    C3..Harmonic balancer

Does anyone know if the large balancer for a 70 LT1 is still available from GM and what the part number is? Was the balancer for 350 CId 350 HP engine the same part number?
    Thx in advance

The Parts Catalog group 0.659 shows pn 6272224 as 1969-80 350 with H/Per., SP. H/Per. That part number is available through GM Restoration Parts, so see your Chevy dealer.

The original part number for the balancer was GM #3947712. Later, that part was discontinued and replaced by GM #6272224 Later yet, that part was discontinued and replaced by GM #12555879, which remains available. The GM #3947712 and GM #6272224 were identical balancers. The GM #12555879 is almost identical, except for the fact that it has embossed degree marks around the perimeter of the outer ring.

        The 1969-70 L-46, 70-72 LT-1, and 73-80 L-82 all used the same balancer.

          Joe Lucia - Data Sources

          Joe,

I am always impressed with your encyclopedic knowledge of Corvette part numbers. What are your data sources?

I use a 1953 thru 1982 Corvette Parts and Illustration Catalog (effective December 1983). I purchased a paper copy as the online illustrations were rather poor. For parts availability I am using the GM Corvette 1953-2003 Anniversary CD. It has a GM Restoration Parts listing for 1953-2003.

The CD lists balancer #6272224 as well as #12555879 (among others)as available from GM Restoration Parts. I do not doubt your statement that 6272224 is discontinued. It must be that when you give an "available" part number to your GM dealer, they find the appropriate "currently available" replacement part number.

The GM Parts CD part numbers seem to correspond to the part numbers in the 1953-82 (December 1983) parts catalog. It would seem the last catalog was the data source for the current GM Restoration Parts CD. I have the NCRS Corvette Manual and Judging Guide for my 1980 (1980-82)and these part numbers seem to match my paper catalog. Is there a data source, other than the NCRS publications, for the original part numbers on earlier cars? thanks

Re: Joe Lucia - Data Sources

            Dave-----

I am not familiar with the CD data base that you referred to. My information comes from a variety of sources. Some are available to the general public (if you can find them) and some are not. For the most part, researching information on a lot of these old part numbers absolutely requires that a variety of sources be used. For parts released/discontinued after about 1980, dealers can usually tell you if the part is still available or if a supercession is available. For parts discontinued or superceded prior to about 1980, dealers will likley not be able to tell you much about them. Their info sources will come up "no record" in many of these cases.

The 6272224 balancer question was an easy one. I knew that one without even having to check any references, at all.

This CD sounds like something Gary should have available in Cincinatti.

                  Dave-----

That part number doesn't look like any GM part number that I've ever seen. No GM part numbers contain alpha characters. Is there an 8 digit, all numbers part number anywhere on the package that the CD is supplied in?

                    Re: Corvette CD

                    Joe,

On closer inspection of the CD box it says "GM Official Licensed Product". The part number is as stated above #A1CV03H1. Beside the GM logo are the numbers "27-1801-33826". The CD evidently is produced by Xcellerator Technologies, Inc. You can see it at www.xcceltech.com

Sorry for any confusion, I had purchased the CD from one of the on-line Chevrolet dealers several months ago (Ken Fichtner). In any case, it is very useful in restoring my car using GM parts. It may not be as useful for NCRS purposes as the parts are not the original part numbers, as you have pointed out.
