Re: C1 Follow up axle shafts (posi vs nonposi)
Kraig,
My memory is real fuzzy on this, hope it will help. In the early, early, '60's I installed a (I believe) 3:70, '58 posi pumpkin in my '56. I used the the '56 axles and read, was told, whatever, etc. to machine 1/8" off the ends of both axles. This I did. I understood that without the axles machined the posi would not work. Posi pumpkin is still in my Corvette, still works. Regards,- Top

Re: C1 Follow up axle shafts (posi vs nonposi)
What's more interesting is that later on, in the late 60's, GMPD standardized on ONE pair of axles for ALL '57-'62 Corvette applications, Posi or open: Left 28-13/16" (3775689) and Right 30-5/16" (3775690). If you look at all the usages and early parts book releases, '57 Posi axles were 1/4" shorter than non-posi axles, in '58 Posi axles were only 1/8" shorter than non-posi axles, and the later "commonized" service axles were 1/8" LONGER than any previously-used axle, Posi or non-Posi. Would lead one to believe that for '57 and later housings, it really doesn't matter which ones you use, as long as you get them on the correct side- Top

Re: C1 Follow up axle shafts (posi vs nonposi)
have over the last 40 years interchanged axles in my 57 vet with those from 55-57 pass cars with out any problems as long as you switch axle bearings. have had troubles with breaking axles in the past. realize that there are different lengths over the late c-1 vet years and also with respect to posi vs nonposi but botton line is that the axles, although of slightly different overall length, will work, at least they have for me.. mike- Top

Re: C1 Follow up axle shafts (posi vs nonposi)
As I stated before and menbers agree ,You can used any year CI axle or car axles from 55 to 64 in your C1. Only the bearings and retainers you need to watch. You can also use the bango from any 55 to 64 car under a CI if you relocate the spring pads.- Top

Re: C1 Bandjo's
Posi bango but for 56 used wider bearings, the flangs on each end of the bango was revered on a posi bango also the posi bango had baffles at the pumpkin area to help direct the oil better and keep the oil from collecting near the axle bearing. The no-posi did not have these differences.Car was the same as Corvette but for the Horn spring location.Knowing the differences of the bango end flange , one can tell by looking under a Corvette weather the bango is no-posi or posi.
If some one added a posi and said the Corvette was an original posi Corvette. Those that knows this can tell if it REALY was.The bango is not judged that I know of , only the 62 is where they only look for no drain plug.- Top
