    C1 Clutch Question II

10.4" it is. Now which one to buy??? Would you buy:

    1. Centerforce I for $298 delivered from Summit. No pilot bearing.
    2. Centerforce II for about $20 more.
    3. Luk RepSet Pro Gold for $133 delivered complete from dialaclutch.com.
    4. $185 complete plus shipping for whatever Paragon sells.
    5. $170 complete plus shipping for whatever Zip sells.

All come with disc, pressure plate, and T/O bearing. All, except Centerforce, also come with a pilot bearing and an alignment tool.

I've heard good things about Luk clutches. But I never heard about the "RepSet Pro Gold" series.

    Chris-----

I'd recommend going with the LUK. I think that's what both Paragon and Zip sell. The LUK will give you a good, OEM-quality clutch.

If you must use the included plastic alignment tool, use care because the pilot tips are sometimes eccentric to the spline. I'd use a steel pilot tool if it were me.

          Chris:

Recommend the Borg Warner, "Brute Power" clutch kit, p/n: 90104, which is what I installed on my 1965 327/365. It is a regular duty disc & spring, which makes it easy on the left leg, and will be fine for all but race applications. The kit contains pressure plate/disc assembly, throwout bearing, and pilot tool. I purchased mine at a local parts jobber for around $90 (discounted).

The clutches Paragon sells are the LuK "Vintage RepSet" brand; I put one in my '57 six years ago, nary a problem - nice piece of work. Resist the temptation to use one of the Borg & Beck-type 3-finger coil spring "hot-rod" clutches from Zoom, Hays, etc.; they're a lousy compromise for a street-driven car. Have also used many Centerforce II's - also a very nice street clutch.

              John:

The clutch ass'y that I spoke about isn't a Borg & Beck, but a Borg Warner. It is a diaphragm (modern) type pressure plate, and not an old style 3 finger type.

hate the diaphragm type press. plate=---tend to stick to the floor boards at high RPM( in spite of return spring properly adjusted) . Love 3 finger pressure plates. Have one in my 57 vet(283 FI that turns l3.1 on Cooker 670/15 repos) and its been in the 57 for better than 10 years and probably 50+ 1/4 mile runs. Another nice thing is the 50 buck price Fort Wayne Clutch gets for these puppies. use the Borge Warner clutch disc. Have never had a clutch pedal stick to the floorpan @ 6700 RPM with the old fashioned 3 finger plate. Had a buddy who grenaded a diaphragm plate in his 57 pass car in early 60's -- nearly lost an ankle in the aftermath. mike

I used the Luk from Paragon for my 59. I highly recommend it.

Your brain tends to stick to the floorboards at high RPM. Your reaction times would normally allow for a clutch R&R -- or -- at least a trip to the porta-potty.
