Hose Clamp Plating

After cleaning some old Wittek tower clamps I noticed that some of the surface appeared to be copper colored. After bead blasting this color was gone. Where the clamps plated with copper before the galvanizing or was the copper color the result of a chemical reaction with the cleaner ( simple green)?

I was told by an employee of Wittek that they slit galvanized sheet to make the clamps. Based on its appearance I would guess that it was electro-plated, as opposed to hot dipped. I am not sure what the electro-plate galvanizing process involves, but perhaps there is someone more familiar with that process who will chime in.
