    C2 Connecting Rods

    Good Morning All,

Finally getting aroung to assembling my 67 427/435 and when preparing to hang my new .040 KB Silv-O-Lite pistons my machinist noticed that 7 of the 8 connecting rods had what he refered to as "oil squiters" located in the caps. He rcognized that not only had these rods been reconditioned but also 5 are of the dimple style and 3 are not, concluding that someone had previuosly been in this motor. Nothwithstanding, with the exception of this oil squiter issue all 8 rods spec's were within recommended tolerances. He decided not to proceed until we determined if it were necessary that I replace the odd rod. BTW the reason for the rebuild was not an oiling issue, in fact he felt that all the bearings and cam looked pretty good. I'd like to get this thing assembled so any information you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Gary

no problem as GM did away with the squirter type rods. i would magnaflux all the rods and install new bolts, cheap insurance with any rod of unknown background. make sure he checks the rods for straightness as this is important to prevent piston drag on the cylinder walls.

      Gary------

Usually, the "dimple" rods will be 7/16" rod bolt type rods and the non-dimple will be 3/8" rod bolt. Do you have a mixture of the rod bolt sizes?

I can't think of a GM big block connecting rod that used 7/16" bolts and without the dimples.

I agree, there were however, dimple rods with 3/8" bolts. I wonder if the set is 3/8" bolts vs 7/16"....I was also thinking the 7/16" bolt rods didn't have the oil squirters, but maybe the early L88 rods had both. I sold a nice set of 66 427/425 rods with squirters, they didn't have the dimples....even though the 425HP engines supposedly did...also, I would think the dimple rods would be heavier on the lower ends, due to more steel in the gusset areas, seems like the balance would be off, but they may have been weight matched in the past. I guess if it were me, go to Scoggin-Dickey or GMpartsdirect.com and get a new set of 8....for around $400 to your door....then get some ARP Prowave rod bolts and forget about your bottom end....Craig
