    69 half shaft markings

I recently purchased a frame marking resto kit for a 69 , in the kit it states that the half shafts are marked with a brush mark or 2 slashes of dark green . my question is , i have seen 2 dark green marks that go around the circumferance of the shaft, on either side. this car is a big block 435 with heavy duty caps. any one able to clarify these marks?

    Re: 69 half shaft markings

Kelly; I had a 69 390 hp coupe serial# 20xx (early car) that still had some green paint on each half shaft. After cleaning carefully, with only soap and water, I could see a (none rusty) patern of a long "X" on each drive shaft. This area still had specks of green in it and I marked the edges out and restripped it. I have some pics of the results and can scan them to you if you like. David

certainly david, send away! are your caps h/d or not , i have not had the opportunity to attend a sancioned event, the opportunity to attend would help my restoration process as far as 435 markings are concerned, i appreciate the time spent answering the call and the forward of pics any one else out there with additional comment on the correct markings for 69 b/b 435 half shaft markings. The example of the 2 rings on each shaft are obvious ly bogus?

Kelly; sory for the delay, they are tring to kill me at work, 13 hours every night. The rings are usually found on the main drve shaft but I thought that started later like 70-71 but am not sure. On my small block car,69-300hp, the main drive shaft still had all original markings that included some green and yellow paint in the form of slashes longways with the shaft and on the ends to mark, I think, for ballancing purposes and the part number clear as day in yellow. My BB was a 390 single 4-barrel (Quadrajet) on that very special low rise alluminum intake.
Paragon is usually right on with brackets and stuff I would trust them untill you get a chance to compare with an unrestored original.
If you are restoring your drive shafts, a cool thing to do is 1. wire brush clean. (after looking for and recording all markings)(use soap and water only) 2. use 180 grit emery cloth and sand longways with the shafts. 3. use a torch rig and a small braseing tip to heat the weld joints, this will turn the shafts the corect colors of brown and blue just like they were freshly built. 4. protect with spray grease or satin clear until the show. Appreciate the effort, just to clarify, you are talking about the half shafts not the driveshaft?

Kelly - as far as I know, the halfshafts have always just used paint daubs versus rings, the BB cars were shot peened for strength, and the green daub noted that action. I also believe BB cars, do to shot peening, lost the weld line running longitudinally down the shaft, these shafts did have a seam weld. The shot peening also probably removed some or most of the weld bluing on the yoke welds. The only concentric rings I have seen are on the driveshafts...Craig
