Powder Coating.

Restoring original colors for chassis components,engine
parts etc. Can they be powder coated,or do they have to be painted like they were at the factory (1967 corvette coupe). Will there be a point deduction for powder coating?

Yes, there will be a point deduction for powder-coated chassis components if it is detected by judges. It likely will be.

Some folks have either powder coated or used catalyzed urethanes followed by subsequent application of factory original finish on top to give the original appearance. Powder coating will usually leave a "thicker" appearance to sharp edges etc, and be a giveaway. I guess if it was me, I would use a durable catalyzed enamel and then use a judging correct topcoat...Craig

I had the local powder-coater do the frame and suspension components on my 61 vet about 7 years ago and he was able to add a flattening agent. It ended up looking like semigloss black and the judges didn't pick up on it. Recently had the frame of my 57 pass FI done by same guy and he forgot to add flattening agent and frame WAYYYYY too glossy and he wouldn't redo the job. I then shot a semigloss black, SEM TRIM PAINT #39143 over his powder caoting and it looks super. nice thing about SEM paints are quick drying and very little lint-dust buildup while car stored for long periods of time. Also doesn't "spot" after washings. Prior to powder coating, i woulod sandblast or chem srtip the frame, metal prep, then paint with rustoleum then top coat it with SEM TRIM PAINT.One such car done this way in '85 has 20k miles on it since resto and its frame would probably score as well now as it did at Lancaster. good luck, mike

August, This subject always seems to generate controversy - but here is my take. I powder coated my 56 frame and all the chassis components possible. I like the added protection it provides. I then shot everything with a satin black, judging acceptable paint. Steve

I love powder coating. To add to what Mike has said, we have a coater here in Baltimore that offers 10 shades of black, from "gloss gloss" to "flat flat". About 30% flattening seems to be good for frames. Chuck
