55 vette dash piece.

On my 55 vette there is a chrome piece that is on the dash and fits around the steering column. It is the piece that has the emergency light in it. Mine is pitted and needs to come off for rechroming. Obviously it has to slip over one end of the steering column. My question (which probably will give away how dumb I am ) is does this piece slip over the end of the steering column at the steering wheel end or the other end. Can I dimantle the steering wheel and the steering wheel hub? and how big of a job is it.

Don... I believe it is going to want to come off the easy way which is going to be to remove the steering wheel asy and turn signal hub. My experience with this is on a 57, so I'm taking some license in assuming they are similar in nature.

Clark is right, but you can remove the turn signal harness from the hub . It will clear the chrom cover. That way you don't have to pull the signal wires out of the steering wheel housing.Remove the small cover plate under the steering housing and just pull the hub up to clear the shaft first.
