While we're on this page (Trivia Q)

Art, thanks for the fill-ins -- I'm working from a circa 1975 T. Michaelis '65 AIM. Nice to know someone has a clearer copy. Often, my lower right-hand corner "Revision Record" is faded beyond comprehension. Also, as I've heard, these AIMs were revised several times throughout the production run, I often wonder if I have the early copy -- is there a way to tell ? Do other AIM reprinters have different versions ?

Trivia Q: [item 2] on this sheet; why does the N03 car use the same rear wiring harness as the convertible (#298870) and not that of the coupe (#298771) ?

Re: While we're on this page (Trivia Q)

        My Guess is

Since the NO3 does not use the rear blower and has the vent block off panel those wires ar not needed, all it needs is the wiring for the courtesy lamp. The wiring for the antenna is covered under the UPC U69.

Re: While we're on this page (Trivia Q)

Wayne, I can't address your question of " Do other AIM reprinters have different versions ? " or who has the clearest reprint----as far as I'm concerned they are all of poor quality and they didn't start life that way.

Your comment about the AIMs being " revised several times throughout the production run" is a total misconception. The Manuals were only issued in their entirety at the beginning of the each model year. When a revision was necessary during the MY, the revisions were numbered consecutively, to a part or operation only that sheet (and any corresponding sheets) were reissued. The revision block would reflect said revisions. The Engineering revisions were added to the revision block------if there was still room in the revision block----if the block was full (or close to full) they would start a new page with a blank revision block and put the latest revision (lets use 9 as a example) at the top of the revision block. So a "new" revision sheet would show revision number 9 at the top of the reissued sheet and revision sheet showing 1-8 would be round filed. The specification person at the plant would receive, from CEC, the number of copies of each revised sheet according to the number of AIM books under his/her control on a regular basis. In other words if he/she had 10 AIM books under his/her control, Chevrolet Engineering Center would sent 10 copies of the same sheet that they would insert into the 10 AIM books---------NOTE-----this specification person would REMOVE the corresponding sheet and round file them!!!!!

The Engineering Record Retention office also received a hard copy of ALL VEHICLE LINE AIMs ( and revision sheets during the MY run) that they processed in the same manor---so their HARD copy AIM books looked just like the plants. BUT--and this is the big BUT----they added one step that the plants didn't do. They has a microfilming process in their office that they used to make MASTER set of AIMs. As each sheet came in to them they would pull out the vehicle lines corresponding roll of film---this film was not developed until the END of the model year----and add (film) the revised sheets as they came in over the course of the MY. Don't forget, I said that they processed the hard copy sheets the same way that the assembly plants did---which meant that they REMOVE the corresponding sheet and round file them!!!!! SO--- this left the Records Retention office with the same INCOMPLETE HARD COPY SET of AIMs as the plants. NOW fast forward to the late 70's-early 80's (I don't recall the exact year) when GM finally let, I think it was Mid America, copy the Record Retention office's INCOMPLETE hard copy AIM books. I don't think Mid America had exclusive rights to sell them---so other after market companies just bought them from Mid America and reproduced and are selling them. With each reproduction the quality has gotten worse.

So you can see that it doesn't matter where you get your copy from----it's probably a poor quality incomplete copy.

GM still has the Record Retention filmed Masters, but our chances of getting dupes are slim to NONE--sorry!

As far as your trivia question goes---- "Trivia Q: [item 2] on this sheet; why does the N03 car use the same rear wiring harness as the convertible (#298870) and not that of the coupe (#298771) ? I don't know.

              Art -- What's a round file ? the garbage can ?

So my best bet is to compare my [bad IMO] copy with a mid-80's Mid America reproduction.

Thanks for the detailed explanation of how these documents were revised.

Wayne Yes, I was going to say **** canned, but this is a GP rated show and I didn't want to offend the powers to be!!!

Since you have 1965s, you are in luck, I have a FIRST generation 1965 AIM copy that I copied when I was at Engineering and it is of very good quality. If you ever need clairfication of any numbers e-mail me and I will see if I can help.
