    Cleaning Up Hose Clamps

Found several correct hose clamps at the junkyard today. What is the best way to remove the corrosion and make them look "new" again. The clamps are Wittek 1-1/16 tower type clamps.

You might try soaking for a few seconds in a 50/50 mixture of water and muriatic acid. That seems to work pretty well. After that dipping I put them in some baking soda and water to neutralize the acid.

Does anyone have a suggestion for how to get a tower clamps to hold without any leaks???? My clamp at the waterneck has been changed and it still leaks.

        Ralph,

Don't know if this could be your problem but if the water neck sealing surface isn't perfectly smooth and the inside of the hose isn't perfectly clean you can have a sealing problem with any kind of clamp.

Roger, if you will put a little white grease all the away around the inside of the clamp it will allow the clamp "to clamp" all around the hose and not just at the tightening bolt. Scott

I've used Bob's method and it works well as long as there is still coating on the clamps. If there is rust, it will remove that also with some time. I use a 5-1 to 10 to 1 mixture, depending on what I'm trying to do.

The waterneck is smooth and the hose was removed and appears to be clean and smooth. I think the idea of using a little grease to allow the tower clamp to tighten all around the hose is a good suggestion. I'll keep you posted.

I have had good success soaking the clamps in naval jelly overnight. They come out like new. It's probably similar to the suggestion to use muriatic acid since naval jelly is basically phosporic acid.
                Hope this helps.

Re: Cleaning Up Hose Clamps - Muriatic Acid

I also use muriatic acid to clean clamps and other little metal pieces. Degrease the part first and get any paint off. Muriatic acid will clean rust and grunge.

You can get muriatic acid at a hardware store. Pool stores too, although they might only sell in a quantity more than you want. Muriatic acid is nasty stuff. Use it carefully. Don't breathe the fumes. One wiff and you'll know why. As with any acid, add the acid to water, not the other way around.

Gee Whiz - I kinda think tower clamps are a breeze compared to Mr Corbin...
