    Engine Number Stamping

Recently purchased a 1968 Roadster, 427/400hp. The engine was recently rebuilt by the previous owner. The engine was balanced and "decked" which required the removal of the engine serial number. The engine was repaired by a professional mechanic and the invoice on the repair indicated that the serial number was re-stamped and signed by the mechanic. To maintain authenticity of "matching numbers" what kind of docuementation is required?

    Thanks,

    Bob

I'm afraid you will loose 38 out of 4500 points for the removal of the original broach marks should you intend to have it judged. If the machine assembly data and the vin # have been restamped using the correct shape etc stamps, then you'll probably receive the 88 points assigned to these parts of the pad.Still quite possible to duntov a car with such and engine pad, good luck mike

Get an affidavit from the mechanic.

If the mechanic is reluctant to do "paperwork", do it for him. Make it up yourself, and drive over there with a Notary Public in tow. Providing legal documents to obsessive Corvette owners is not his usual business, so you've got to make it easy for him.

Affidavit should simply state the following facts.

        1. Affiant is the owner/mechanic of the (name of establishment).
        2. That establishment's usual business is rebuilding and remachining motors.
        3. ___ brought a motor into that establishment for a rebuild on (date).
        4. That motor contained the following stampings on the engine pad. ____
        5. In the course of the rebuild, the affiant witnessed that stamping being ground off.
        6. After the rebuild, the affiant witnessed the following (same) information stamped on the pad, in the same place/in the same fashion/with as close to the same stamps (state what happened) by _____.
        7. After the rebuild, the affiant delivered the motor to _____/installed the motor in the following car (identify by VIN).

Bob... I think it important for you to understand that once that block is decked, I don't care if you have 7000 pages of documentation from the guy that decked it, that paperwork will not alter the outcome of NCRS judging if the net result of alteration does not appear as original.

In other words, paperwork will not change what a judge is looking at.

I know it's 20/20 hindsight Bob, but I had my block decked and I instructed the machinist to leave the numbers intact and he did. It doesn't matter if the serial number pad is a few thousandths higher than the deck, and a good machinst can stop the head before it machines the numbers off.
