Can anyone help me with the following casting number on my aluminum standard bell housing?? It is a GM and has this number: 3858403 What size fly wheel, disc and pressure plate. I currently have a steel "explosion proof" bell housing with an 11" disc and the fly wheel measures 14.25" diam. The flywheel and clutch assembly will not fit in the above aluminum BH. Also, If I go down to the 10" size, will I have to change my starter (the current starter bolts to the block). All of this is going into a 61' but the motor is a 66 327. Thanks for the help. Jim

The '403' bellhousing is designed for use with a 12-3/4" flywheel and 10-1/2" clutch. The '403' (or the functionally identical '383') were used on all 1964 through 68 small blocks, 1965 L-78, 1967-69 L-88 and 70-72 ZR-1. The '403' was NEVER originally used for a C1, though. Using this type of bellhousing requires some modifications but, due to the scattershield, those mods may already have been performed.
If you are curently using a 14" flywheel, you will need to change the starter or, at least, the starter nose.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Bell Housing
Thanks Joe!!! I'm hunting for that smaller fly wheel now. Although the 403 is not original, it's closer than the "Scatter shield" (thanks for that term too ). Taking rough measurements, the clutch fork pivot ball location is in the same spot on all 3 planes, the only mod I can see is the clutch cross shaft bracket hole on the 403 is not tapped (again different from the 61). I'll amass the parts and "bench" test it (on the floor). Thanks again for the help!!! Jim- Top

That flywheel is not hard to find. You can get a very good one from GM under GM #14085720 which is a light-weight, nodular iron flywheel (15 lbs), or a standard-weight under GM #366860. You can also get more-or-less equivalent flywheels in the aftermarket for less money. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
