Anyone ever swapped the original front ball bearing set up on a C1 for a tapered bearing set up. If so, how has it done in the long run? Cost? And what are the part numbers for the seal, inner and outer bearing sets? I am thinking of converting my 1960 before this years road tour. Thanks.

Re: C1 Front Wheel Bearings
Search the archive on the Corvette Forum C1/C2 board. There was a lenghty thread on this subject fairly recently. The part numbers and sources for the bearings are listed. Many folks report improved handling after making the switch, others say their ball bearings are just fine. I personally haven't tried the roller bearings, but intend to do so in the future.- Top

...as well in the archives of this board. One response by Roy Braatz on 10 January 2003 also lists part numbers and a source. Most folks speak highly of roller bearings.....Regards- Top

I have them in my 56--------------------specifically because of Roy Braatz-----------many years ago. They WILL NOT turn your front suspension into a C5, but they WILL improve the way it tracks down the road.- Top

Re: C1 Front Wheel Bearings
I converted 1 of my '62's several years back to the tapered bearings. I've probably put a half bazzilion miles on it since. If I were on the witness stand and asked if I could tell the difference between ball and needle bearings, the answer would be no. The price for the bearings are not that different - and I suppose the 13# preload on the balls causes some friction compared to the 0# preload of the needle bearings. I was a little upset that the seller of the conversion kit supplied bearings with no numbers on them. I'd hate to be in South Dakota and try to explain what # conversion bearing I need @ Pep Boy's.- Top

Re: C1 Front Wheel Bearings
dipstick: i too have converted several of my solid axle vets as well as my 57 210 post to tapered needle bearings and the only advantage as i see them having over the factory-style ball bearings in cages is their longevity. i've replaced ball bearings after as few as 20k miles in spite of religious grease paks.got my bearings from the classic chevy club and don't think they were part numbered and its too damn cold to get one of the cars out,,bring in shop and look for part #s. just buy another set and haul them along with you when you come back east this summer( you can store them behind kick panels where you've been known to store contraband in the past) how's my spelling? got fired form the community college-now teaching girl scouts how to typr. mnikie- Top

Re: C1 Front Wheel Bearings
How's your spelling ???? When you spell your own name Mnikie, I can only conclude a repeat of spelling 101 might be in order. As far as hiding additional stuff behind my kick panels - I find there is standing room only, take a number, don't call us. NO2, air compressors, roller this and roller that, looks like a photo shoot for a cover on a PAW Catalog, but I have NO idea how it all got there. Maybe the UAW's finest put it there to drive NCRS members nuts. Send a SASE for a free copy of my 24 gallon tank sticker - or is that stikkur...- Top
