Can I use a new balancer off a new ZZ4 crate engine on the 350 in my 66? I thought I remembered reading somewhere that the timing tab for this balancer is at the 12 oclock position (behind the water pump), instead of the standard 2 oclock position. Is this true, and if it is, would this setup work with a short water pump? Thanks in advance, Dan White

Re: ZZ4 Balancer

The ZZ4 balancer, GM #12555879, will not work properly on any pre-69 small block. At a minimum, the TDC timing mark will be about 9 degrees off for pre-69 small blocks. Also, since the 12555879 has degree marks embossed around a portion of the balancer ring perimeter, all of these will be off.
It may be possible to use this balancer on a pre-69 small block, though, if new timing marks are placed on the balancer. Personally, I would not get involved in it, though. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Yes, I somehow missed that in your post. The ZZ4 balancer will work perfectly on any 69+ 350 engine. No problem, at all. However, the pulley system that you use on the engine will have to be compatible with the balancer. If you are using the pulley system from a 1966 L-79, that will work perfectly. If you are using the pulley system from a 66 300hp engine, it will not be compatible. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
