    C-2 Spare Tire Size

What is the widest 15 inch radial tire that will fit in a 64 spare tub? Thanks

The best I could do was a "215". 225"s didn't fit my boot.

I've got a 205-70R15 on a repo KO in my 65 coupe spare tire tub. The cover does not close all the way, but enough to get by.

        Peter,

I have the long bolts on my 67 tub and have a 215-65 mounted on a 15x6 wheel.

          Re: C-2 Spare Tire Size

Remember, tires with similar size rating (e.g. P215-75R-15) are NOT identical in terms of geometry! They share a common silhouette, but DO vary in exact dimensions for tread, sidewall, Etc. So, your basic question (what's the largest) begins being biased by the individual tire, mfgr, model.

The spare tire carrier (presuming it's not been altered by prior owners) was designed to house a Goodyear/Firestone 670x15 bias ply tire from the era. Later cars ('65-67) made use of different length hinge bolts to accommodate 775x15 tires as well as the optional wheels. So, what works for one fella's mid-year car may or may not work for your car, especially when you throw in the minor geometry differences of specific tires, by mfgr/model/size.

Since most use the spare as just that (a seldom used road emergency only item), a guaranteed fit can be achieved by obtaining a real McCoy 670x15 tire in good condition from a scrap yard. Some of the older ma/pa tire stores just might still have NOS off-brand (Atlas, Etc.) rubber sitting gathering dust for sale at bargain prices....

I've picked 'em up for this purpose for $15-20 and it gets the job done! But, if you want a 5th, matching, tire that you can actively use in rotation, then you're going to have to do the 'math' with the help of your tire dealer. Start with having him look up the specific dimensions of an older 670x15 tire and sort his tire offerings by closest geometry match.
