I'm thinking of replacing the blown L71 in my '69 'Vette with a GM ZZ502 crate engine. How about using my original cast iron heads on the 502 block? Or, what about simply using the Holley 3x2 carb set-up over the complete 502 engine. I'd appreciate any advice on things to watch out for and, generally, how to proceed. Thanks to all!

Re: ZZ502 in a '69 L71
buy the partial 502 engine, part# 12568782 and install you heads and carbs. the ZZ 502 alum heads have oval ports not the retangular ports like you engine so there will be a port mismatch with your manifold.you will need a different damper and flywheel.- Top

There is also an interference problem with an area in the lifter valley, I believe the underside of the intake is slightly ,o;;ed in this application to accommodate this problem if memory serves me correctly.
You can contact George Diana who is using this setup on his 1967 L71 and has modified everything necessary. George is a member and his profile will allow you to contact him, I can't find his e mail address
Best of Luck
