    C2 HEI Tach Drive

Hello, I going to swap engines on my 63 coup. Now that the number matching 250 HP is complete I've decided to purchase a crate HP motor as a spare. I recently read in Mid America, a HEI Tach Gear Dist. available. Are there other manf. available and any advice on the conversion kit offered.

The kit that I've seen is a converted non-tach drive HEI distributor. This is manufactured by Hi-Tech Innovations. It will work great. But, it's expensive.

Check MSD's website. They make a great tach drive distributor which mates to their high performance ignition boxes. Much better solution than an HEI unit.

Lyle I installed a ZZ crate engine in my 70 and firmly believe that the HEI distributor that comes in the ZZ crate engine will meet any street/strip driving you would most likely encounter. The GM HEI is a proven reliable distributor. I have entertained the task of obtaining a electronic tack from a 75 Corvette and installing it so I would have a tach. Just haven't missed using the factory tach enough to procede. I thought about the MSD tach drive distributor, but I was not interested in also having to buy the MSD unit to make it work. Performance Distributors of Memphis markets a high performance HEI modified with tach drive that can be used also. Another option is to remove the gear drive from the ZZ crate engine HEI and install it on your original Corvettes distributor and install it in your ZZ crate engine and maintain a conventional ignition system. If I do anything I will probably try this first just so I can get more use out of my Sears Engine Analyser's dwell function. If you use the ZZ's HEI distributor it has to have a full 12 volts. The ballast resistor should not be used.
